The Princess Tails

The Musings of Zena, a Tibetan Terrier sharing her life and wisdom with Raffles, a Standard Poodle

The Pumped Princess

Our pal over at Mollie & Alfie’s has been talking about exercise which The Producer has looked at but of course does nothing about.

As you know I recently got a personal trainer. He will fulfil the role of bodyguard as well one day but for the moment we are focussing on the fitness part of his job.

I hate to admit it but I had become a little unfit. I wasn’t fat you understand. I have always had a very slim figure, but I was a little slow on my feet and because my pal Zac couldn’t run, I had become a little sedentary.

Enter Raffles.

I am now very fit and I thought I would share some of our morning routines with you.

First of all warm up is very important before you begin a strenuous exercise programme. Raffles has me doing some gentle stretching in the house before we go out for the real work.

Stretch Number One

My first stretch involves lying over the stool, head down and back legs comfortably extended. Not too far back, don’t want to pull any hamstrings.

Second stretch position

From the head down position I gently slide my front legs forward a little and lift my head stretching my neck, back and chest a little.

I do this a few times and then we move onto the next stage.

At this point Raffles usually has me go out for a brisk walk.

We start off with a brisk walk

Sometimes motivation can be a problem so it is good to arrange to meet with some friends, that way you don’t find excuses to avoid the exercise.

Meeting up with some friends for a session

After a fair bit of walking we are ready to go for the burn and really get the heart beat up.

The heart pounding chase exercise

And still more running…….

He drives me pretty hard!

As you can see after the run I am pretty tired and then we enter the cooling down part of the routine which I love.

The roll and stretch

I personally enjoy the rolling and stretch to cool down, I find that my muscles really respond and I rarely suffer any stiffness.

Doing the same thing all the time is not only boring but it only exercises the same muscles so Raffles is careful to make sure I get other exercises throughout the day.

Shoulder & Chest work

He enjoys challenging me with new exercises that he thinks up.

One of my favourites working on the jaw muscles

He is not afraid to use whatever he can find around the house to make the exercises more interesting and keep the interest alive. If exercising becomes boring you are less inclined to do it.

Raffles makes sure I am never bored! He is turning out to be a great personal trainer and I am thinking of hiring him out to those who want a challenging exercise regime.

The end result!

After all that exercise reward yourself with a good rest as I have above. And yes, The Producer did have to check I was still breathing!!!!

Love from Zena, the fittest Princess

I am The Princess (aka Zena), niece of Zac the All Black and awesome Tibetan Terrier who took me in when I was just a six week pup and tried to teach me all he knew. When I was six and he was eight, Zac crossed over the rainbow bridge and all of a sudden I was alone. I could no longer be the ditzy, happy-go-lucky pup that I had been. This is a diary of how one Princess managed when the world turned real.

  1. Oh Cod! PZ!!! You are so FIT!! and ahhhhh…pretty pooped it looks like…pace yourself gurlfurriend, I have also been on a year long exercise program…I had become a bit, ummm…’round’ in the middle during my year of sedentary scared living at the shelter. So Mom and I planned a routine just as you and your personal trainer Raffles have. But, you must pace yourself. If some days you just can’t get all that cardio done, then back off a bit, send your trainer out with others OR with the bipeds who brought her home…just a thought. Savannah

    • That’s a great idea. In fact Raffles has been out a couple of times without me towards the end of the day – girls gotta have a bit of ‘me’ time too 😀

  2. Lol, wow that trainer of yours sounds like a winner! You’re looking great! 😛

  3. Hey that’s a great exercise routine you’ve got there! I LOVE the first stretch – what a great photo!

    • I do like my stretches! The Producer laughs at me but we Tibetans like unusual positions. I’m thinking of taking up yoga, I think some of those poses might be just right for me:-D

  4. You’re letting Raffles determine everything. He needs to be put in his place. You have the right to do or not do what you want and when you want to do it. Raffles is in your world, not you in his. Say after me, “Raffles, another treat, please”.

  5. Excellent – a personal trainer. Zak has Zeus as his personal trainer. The routine only happens a few times a week but involves a great deal of boxing, wrestling, running and tugging, followed by a great deal of stretching and snoring. Keep up the good work!

    • I wouldn’t mind it only a few times a week but I’m on an intensive course at the moment. I’m sure it will slow down a little when he does….. soon please 😀

  6. You need to make your own exercise video! Those stretches are AMAZING!!

  7. Zena is so funny, it really looks like she is stretching. That is so cute you can take them off leash to really run and play, is that a usual thing for their walks? If so I am envious, as the only place I can do that is the dog park thus far, which is kinda far so we don’t go a lot. BTW- How old is Raffles now? just curious:)

    • Raffles is 5 months now, I did read somewhere that Standards can grow until they are two but I think he’s nearly there…. maybe… perhaps… hopefully?
Yes, we have several places where we can let them off leash. There is the dog park which they love, the dogs that go there are great and we know most of them. There is another reserve nearby which isn’t a dog park and most of the time when we’ve been there we have been alone, they love that and soon we get to introduce Raffles to the beach. Zena isn’t a great beach fan being a Tibetan and not liking water, but Raffles should enjoy it. I want to take pictures of his first visit to the seaside 🙂

  8. That looks like a great work out, Zena! You must be turning into a super fit pup…pretty soon you won’t even need a bodyguard! 🙂

  9. Great exercise program, miss Zena!

  10. Zena, that’s some fitness routine! I see someone has suggested a fitness video. I think if you release one, you’ll be really famous very quickly! The photos are great.

  11. What a fitness changer Raffles has been! Love the shots of you out and about. Really good to see you get fit and active again 😉

    • Yes it is good. I had become a little lazy and when Zac left me I didn’t want to do anything. I wouldn’t play, didn’t really want to walk and now here I am running around like I did when I was a little pup – it feels good 🙂

  12. Blimey Zena, Youz gonna be super fit..I’mz gonna try that 🙂 Can I borrow your persona trainer ??? BOL xx00x
    Mollie and Alfie

  13. Lovely to see Zena & Raffles getting on so well- looks like they have a good little companionship happening 🙂

    • Yes, most of the time. I have shown Zena Zac’s spot under the computer so she can call an end to the games or she would be worn to a frazzle! She does tend to spend a lot of the day under there at the moment but out in the big wide world, she calls the shots. Looking forward to you seeing them again.

  14. OMD… and my staff bought the richard simmons dvd – who needs this guy if you can have the full exercising lessons by Zena? ooooh humans ;o)

  15. Zena, just watching you makes me feel like taking a nap 😉

  16. stretching is fundamental.
In the last pic you look like you were melting down the chair.

    • That’s a good description. I am very good at everything I do. I am good at playing and running and I am very good at relaxing as you have seen from previous less dignified pictures. In this one The Producer took a couple of photos and then got really concerned that I might be too relaxed ie: dead! She thought maybe the workout with Raffles had been too much – should have seen her face 😀

  17. Hey PZ, Jet here. Hi Raffles.

PZ, you are looking mighty fit, your royalness. 🙂

We think you’re ready for a fitness video, you hit all the psychological as well as physical issues. Love the stretch and roll, you look the cutest there, if I do say so myself.

Little Miss Energizer Bunny has trained me as well, since Koko crossed over. I have to admit, I enjoy her “paw” camp!

    • It’s more fun to exercise with a pal isn’t it? I wouldn’t do all of this by myself so I suppose I have to be grateful to Raffles for some things. Exercise and the increase in treats in the house 😀
We are almost ready to launch our next Princess Tails where you play my hero Jet – should be fun 🙂

  18. Wow, Zena, what a fit body, that keeps you young and in shape. Great pictures! The last one looks like a final stretch to me 😉

  19. Zena, you are so flexible! Those stretches are really working out for you:-)

    • I am aren’t I. Running from the behemoth keeps me loose and at night I like to do the belly stretch on The Producer and have a massage so all in all I think I have this fitness thing licked 😀

  20. Wow. That will certainly all help you keep fit. Not that you need it! Whee think it looks like a lot of hard work. Think whee will keep fat instead! 🙂

    Nibbles, Nutty, Buddy & Basil

    • I am sure you do your own exercises and will not seriously be fat!
Sometimes we need an incentive. I did think that The Producer was going to use Raffles to help her keep fitter (notice not fit), but it seems that it is I who is benefiting 🙂

  21. Dear Zena,
me has gots all my stars, so me wants to thanks yous for giving me my first star. If yous goes to my post today ( ) you can download a special star for yous!
    Kissies Nellie

  22. Uh, you youngsters go for it.

    • Are you talking about the visitor map? I couldn’t get it on the sidebar either – gave up. There are other things to wrestle with 😀 A dog only has four paws you know 🙂
